Since August 12, 2026 the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has applied, with progressive obligations and timetables.
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 —known as the PPWR— does not only affect those who make a box or a jar. It will progressively reach the operators who place packaged products on the market, and it focuses, among other aspects, on composition, substances of concern, recyclability, waste prevention and information.
For manufacturers of food, supplements, cosmetics and industrial products, this makes packaging an even more visible part of development.
A good starting point is to review which packaging and components are used for each product, who provides the compliance information and documentation, the composition of the material and the presence of restricted substances, and the compatibility between product, packaging and shelf life.
Not all the requirements of the regulation start on the same day. That is why the useful work consists of building a timetable by type of packaging, product and responsibility within the chain.
A formula does not end in the mixer. It also has to work —technically and from a regulatory standpoint— inside its packaging.
Because knowledge is part of the supply, too.
